What is a Domain Name?
A Domain Name is an address on the Internet. For example, Chain Reaction Web's
Domain is chainreactionweb.com.
What is allowed in a Domain Name?
The only characters allowed in a Domain Name are the 26 letters of the standard
alphabet, numbers 0-9, and hyphens (-). A Domain cannot begin or end with a
hyphen, but it can contain a hyphen. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names
and Numbers, also know as ICANN serves as the governing body for Domain Name
registration. ICANN is currently allowing up to 67 characters including the
.com, .net, or .org.
Below are examples of acceptable Domain Names that Chain Reaction Web
can register:
- sample.com
- sample.net
- sample.org
Below are examples of unacceptable Domain Names that Chain Reaction
Web cannot register:
- illegal_a b characters.net (the underscore and the space are not acceptable
characters in a Domain Name)
Chain Reaction Web will not register www.sample.org because the registry is
not able to register the alpha sequence "www." due to it not being apart of
the name. If you would like a Domain Name with the address www.sample.org you
would simply register sample.org. The "www." sequence will be added to the name
by your service provider or by the System Administrator at sample.org. The same
principle applies to http://sample.com because the "http://" is not part of
the name.
The name I want is not available, but doesn't seem to be in use, can I get
it?
No, if a Domain Name is not available you cannot register the Domain Name.
In many cases the Domain Name is under contract even if it appears to be available.
Who owns my Domain Name?
The organization or the person listed in the "Whois" as the Registrant is considered
the owner for the length of the contract period.
Where will my Domain Name reside?
Your Domain Name will be registered to reside on Chain Reaction Web's Domain
Name Servers.
May I register my Domain Name using different name servers?
You must first register using the Chain Reaction Web Domain Name servers. Once
you have registered your Domain Name with Chain Reaction Web you can change
the name server your Domain Name will reside on from your control panel.
I made a mistake in spelling my Domain Name how do I correct it?
If you have misspelled your Domain Name you will need to submit a new registration.
Once your new name is registered you may find it useful to point the misspelled
name to the corrected name to ensure that you receive the maximum visitors to
your site, especially if this is a common misspelling.
May I cancel my Domain Name?
Yes, to cancel your Domain Name you must provide written authorization
to cancellations@chainreactionweb.com
from the e-mail address of the registered owner of the Domain Name.
Important Note: You will NOT receive a refund if you choose to cancel
your Domain Name.
May I use my old NIC handle?
Chain Reaction Web does not require the use of NIC handles. Furthermore, NIC
handles are not interchangeable from one Registrar to another and are only used
by a few Registrars.
I don't have a "company" name. What do I use for "organization name"?
In the organization name field, please use your own name. It is not acceptable
to leave the field blank or enter the words none, personal, home, or N/A.
